How to Maintain a Frost Free Fridge and Freezer

Defrosting is not required when you have a frost-free refrigerator or freezer. This can save you time, effort and electricity when compared to a traditional refrigerator/freezer.

If you notice ice crystals on the package food, it could be damaged. These crystals can cause freezing burns or alter the texture of food.

Defrost

The process of defrosting your freezer isn't glamorous or fun, but it is an essential part of maintaining your fridge and freezer. Each when you open the freezer's door warm air infiltrates which causes condensation and freezing on the inside of the freezer. This frost interferes with the freezer's temperature control, which causes it to work overtime and use more energy. It can also affect the taste and quality of food and can cause freezer burn.

The best method of defrosting the freezer is to let it melt naturally. However, this could take a long time. In a pinch, a hairdryer or a handheld steam cleaner can accelerate the process. Be sure to switch off and unplug the freezer, remove all frozen foods and wash up any spilled water before you begin working.

Before you start making your preparations, ensure you have a towel or a plastic liner to catch any water that may spill during the defrosting process. It's also a good idea to empty your entire freezer to make it easier to organize the food left and eliminate expired or old items. After defrosting is completed ensure that you wipe down and dry the freezer compartment thoroughly before turning it off.

To speed up the natural defrost process, open and close the freezer door a few times in order to help the temperature to rise. Remove all shelves and drawers to make it easier to reach the frozen ice. You can also put some highly absorbent towels or newspaper on the floor to absorb any puddles of melting Ice.

When the ice is melting make sure you keep a warm spoon or plastic spatula on hand to break off any thick chunks that have accumulated on the walls inside. Avoid sharp objects like knives, forks or Ice picks when trying to break through the ice. This can cause damage and leaks to the freezer. Make sure to wash and clean the shelves and drawers that are removable after the ice has been removed. After cleaning the freezer, plug it in and let it run for a couple of hours to get back to its normal freezing temperature.

Clean

A regular clean is the best way to prevent a build up of spores and food odors. Throw away any produce that is damaged or over its best. Clean all drawers and shelves with soapy water using a damp cloth (I use Seventh Generation Natural Dish Liquid). Then, dry them. I also wipe down the freezer with a cloth coated in a solution comprising baking soda and vinegar or water and water. The stubborn stains can be removed using a non-scratch scrub brush. I like to vacuum the coils in the back of my fridge too using an attachment for nozzles. This pulls out all the pet hair, and dust that accumulates in difficult-to-access places.

You will not need to defrost your fridge with frost more often than you do with other models. Frost-free refrigerators have an engine that circulates cold air to cool the food, making it unnecessary to do manual defrosting. However, it is important to clean your refrigerator at least every week, removing all food items that have passed the expiration date and cleaning out all the old jars, bottles and soy sauce packets.

To make the task of defrosting your freezer easier, remove all the food from the freezer and put it in a freezer that is not used or cooler containing frozen ice or an enclosed box with blankets. During this process, you should protect the floor of the freezer with an old cloth. You can remove any ice that remains after the freezer has been cleared of ice using a plastic scraper.

If your refrigerator is equipped with an automatic defrost feature, you will see an indicator light that will inform you when it's time to defrost. To avoid losing any frozen items during the defrost process you can empty the freezer and set it on a counter. You can then replenish it with frozen food items that have an extended shelf life. You can then use the old towel at the bottom of the freezer to capture any water that drips as it melts.

Maintaining

If the evaporator is coated with frost coil, it will freeze and cause the fridge to work harder and use more energy. Regular maintenance is essential. This can be prevented by unplugging the fridge and cleaning the evaporator.

When the defrost system is operating properly there should be a layer of frost that will form on the evaporator in an evenly pattern. If there is an accumulation of ice on the evaporator, and it's not caused by problems with defrost, it may be an indication of a malfunctioning timer or defrost termination thermostat.

Some older models can have a clogged supply and return air ducts from the freezer and back to it. This can be caused by pet hair or food residue. This makes the compressor work harder, and it creates excess heat. This heat will then migrate into the refrigerator section cabinet, and cause temperatures to rise. Maintaining the gasket on the freezer's door free of any damage and ensuring that it is sealed will reduce this problem.

The freezer's frequent opening can allow humid air to enter the appliance, creating a climate where ice and frost are more likely to form. The freezer should be kept shut tightly to minimize the chance of frost and ice.

Clean the drain trough for the evaporator regularly to ensure that it isn't clogged with food residue or ice. A hand-held vacuum hose, or a special refrigerator coil cleaner (typically with brush that can be slipped into difficult-to-access places) is an effective method to accomplish this.

Make sure the freezer is free of any obstructions that could hinder air flow or block the condenser fan. To remove food residues and to prevent odours from forming, clean the shelves and walls with a mixture made of hot dish soap, water or baking powder. Vents for air between refrigerator and freezer compartments must not be blocked as this could cause inadequate circulation of air, which can increase the humidity inside the appliance.

Repair

There are a variety of reasons your frost-free fridge freezer might not be operating properly.  best fridge freezers frost free  of them are straightforward and easy to fix. However, some require the help of a specialist. The issue is typically caused by something that stops air from moving towards and from freezer section. It could be caused by over-packed packages of food or air gaps that are blocked, or by closing the door for too long.

It is crucial to disconnect your refrigerator prior to making any repairs or maintenance. This reduces the chance of electric shock and allows accumulated frost to melt naturally.

If the refrigerator is not cooling, it could be because of an issue with the defrost system. This kind of refrigerator and freeze will automatically turn on a heater to melt any frost that is on the evaporator. The melted frost drains down a drain pipe into a pan at the back of the refrigerator and it then evaporates into the air. The defrost-timer may need to be replaced if it's malfunctioning.

It's also possible that a damaged seal is preventing cold air from getting into the freezer compartment of your refrigerator. You can solve this issue by cleaning the seal with soap and warm water. You should also make sure that there aren't any objects sitting on the back wall of the freezer, or blocking any freezer vents.

You could also try replacing the freezer gasket if it's worn or damaged. Most major appliance makers offer replacement parts directly including freezer gaskets. It is important to remember that only a certified professional should replace the freezer gasket.

Or, you could be having issues with the evaporator fan that circulates air through the freezer area of your fridge. There is a clicking noise when the fan is turned on. This is because the ice on the evaporator coils has become too thick and is impinging on the fan's blades. This will require an expert to be identified and fixed.
